Spring Break

While everyone else my age is partying and going crazy at those stereotypical spring break locations like South Padre and Panama City Beach, I spent my spring break in Anchorage, Alaska. I was going down with a friend who was also a teacher in Alaska. Turns out, Anchorage is pretty crazy as well.

So the first night I went to a bar in Anchorage that had an open mic night. The bar was pretty large and the comedians were horrible but hey, I got to drink some beer and play some pool. Overall, it was going well. Later, a guy comes up to my friend and I and struck up conversation. Nothing was out of the ordinary. He asked where I was from and if I was just visiting. So I told him Im from Kansas and we are just staying for a couple of days. This guy didn't mess around. He says, without hesitation and with no transitional conversation, the man asks if I would like to do cocaine in the bathroom. "Uhhh thanks but I think I will pass this time." It wasn't too long after this conversation that Kenzie and I decided to head home.

On the second day we reminisced and laughed about this drug dealer guy and how he had offered us our choice of his variety of drugs free of charge. Thinking about this experience, we decided to play it safe and walk to a mexican restaurant for margaritas! Afterwards, we opted to stay in and casually drink in our Air BnB. Our driveway was too steep to park the car so we went to the next block over to a house that had a big parking lot. After knocking on several doors we finally talk to someone who says "You can ask my husband. He is enjoying the downstairs." and then promptly slams the door in our face. So we go to the downstairs door which is covered with about 10 cameras and knock on the door. The door opens to a half dressed male and a trashy looking woman. After some conversation the man calls down to the basement for Bob. The basement door opens and smoke swirls out and we catch a glimpse of some slot machines and what looked like it could have been a poker table. Overall, Bob lets us park in his lot and offers for us to come and "enjoy the downstairs." After all this, the group concludes that Bob runs and an underground casino/whorehouse. This small house had too many bedrooms that would mysteriously lock when somebody knocked on the door.

Tuesday was quite the day. I made Kenzie hike up Flattop Mountain. Now, that sounds fine and dandy until we start talking about weather conditions. In Anchorage, it was just warm enough that the snow would melt during the day, leaving a thick layer of ice. If you are somebody who knows me well, you would know that I do not back down from challenges. Despite many people saying that the mountain is too slick to navigate without the use of ice picks and shoe spikes, Kenzie and I scaled to the top. You can view many of the pictures from this hike in the gallery. Later that night we went out and had our first "normal" night out. We went and got drinks and did what you would expect to happen at bars.

Thus, spring break is over and all the students and teachers are grudgingly headed back to reality and the classroom.
