I got the chance to go on a ride today. One of my teacher friends was taking his snow mobile out for a scenic drive and asked if I wanted to tag along. Naturally, I couldn’t refuse this kind of opportunity. So, I threw on all of my warmest, coziest winter gear, and hopped on the back of the machine.

The ride was smooth. I had a pretty cozy spot since this machine had a little seat in the back. We headed down to the river but soon, we turned back. We were going to cross the river because we heard there was a herd of caribou just outside of town but we could see some standing water. After some discussion, we both decided we rather liked being warm, dry and above the rushing current beneath the ice.

We let our friends know that we were not going to hunt the caribou and instead headed towards the mountains behind teacher housing. We were just outside of town when I saw my first Alaskan Moose. The sheer size is impressive to anyone. They are truly beautiful and majestic animals, until they begin to run. Granted, our snow was very fresh, very powdery, and very deep. Any animal would struggle to run through this snow but the moose has to be the funniest of them all. As she ran, her legs looked like noodles as she trudged through the deep snow. It was hilarious looking. The biggest animal I’ve seen since being in Alaska looked absolutely ridiculous. It was awesome and I wish I could have caught it on camera.

Anyway, we headed up towards the Bornite Mine and saw a second moose (My lucky day)! We headed up the mountain a little bit further but it was beginning to get pretty cold so we stopped and looked at the view. We could see out over Shungnak and Kobuk which was pretty cool. I can only imagine the view from the top. Maybe on my next adventure I will reach the summit.
